EDNA

Edna Ibel Barnes is a caring wife, a devoted daughter and a loving sister.  She is also a great therapist.  Edna was born in Guatemala and came to the United States with her family at the age of 10.  Her education began in Los Angeles, California where her parents stressed excellence.  Her thirst for knowledge and drive to work hard made it easy for her to excel in her studies.  From elementary to high school, Edna applied herself with diligence and discipline receiving many accolades and honors.  Her educational background includes a bachelors degree in Psychology from California State University of Northridge and a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in community psychology from the University of Antioch, Los Angeles.

For more than a decade, Edna’s professional joy has been working with children and families. In 2004 she partnered with her high school mentor to open a Charter School in the heart of South Central Los Angeles to serve under-served communities. She worked for New Designs Charter for 6 years as a Director of Student Services. At New Designs, her passion for mental health began to flourish and she transitioned to serve another institution as a Family Services Counselor. Over the past few years, she has been working as a mental health therapist with children and their families who are involved with the Department of Children and Family Services and the Department of Mental Health.

Edna’s passion is to bring healing to people who have been through a traumatic or stressful experience. She endeavors to help her clients learn how to find a healthy perception of themselves and to strengthen their relationships.Her belief is that no single approach is the right one for every individual, so she has chosen to use an eclectic approach and work collaboratively with her clients to bring about social change.

Edna is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist whose treatment specialization includes providing psychotherapy for individuals, couples counseling, family counseling, parenting support, stress management, and conflict resolution.  She has been praised for her work with adolescents and children suffering with the challenges stemming from anxiety, depression, ADHD and other mental and emotional conditions.  She has extensive experience in issues related to childhood trauma, Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, Inter-partner violence (DV). She has practiced in a variety of settings, including schools, clinics, and private practice. She is trained in the Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) and is a certified Domestic Violence counselor.  This has allowed her to work with victims of crime for the past four years. As a Marriage Family Therapist she has come to realize that in order to produce change, one has to have a safe and compassionate environment and deserves a compassionate therapist who can connect with the individual helping them to feel safe and secure.

Edna looks forward to the opportunity to earn the confidence and trust of everyone that she works with.  She believes strongly that counseling means hope.
